Wisconsin voters save Wisconsin, and maybe America: 26 crucial days until the 2026 midterm elections

In 2022, Tony Evers won election for Governor in Wisconsin by 29,227 votes.

In 2024, Donald Trump won Wisconsin's 10 electoral votes for President by 29,397 votes.

Less than 30,000 votes. That's the difference in statewide races in Wisconsin. The margins are SO close here!

Very annoying.

But also...coolest thing ever.

A lot of people live in places where the outcome of the upcoming midterm election is practically a foregone conclusion. They live in a red state or a blue state, and it's not even close. A few thousand people changing their mind doesn't change anything - so why bother learning about the issues, getting to know the candidates and possibly changing your vote?

But in Wisconsin...we are divided.

So each vote REALLY matters...both for the fate of our state and - in some places - our whole county.

Wisconsin:

Republicans have been in control of the Wisconsin legislature since 2011. Our legislature is made up of two houses: the State Assembly (currently 54 Republicans and 45 Democrats)...

...and the State Senate (currently 18 Republicans and 15 Democrats).

In November 2026, experts say there is a good chance that at least the WI State Senate will be flipping to Democrat control, and maybe the WI State Assembly as well.

Why does that matter? Well in Wisconsin - that flip is EVERYTHING. That's because in Wisconsin, whichever party is the majority party in each chamber controls the agenda through its leadership and committee chairs. Then the lawmakers in those positions control what bills get hearings and when they come up for a vote. (If a chair won't schedule a bill, it dies.)

So Majority Leader in the Senate and the Speaker in the Assembly have massive power.

Republicans have ruled Wisconsin since 2011 with an iron fist, pushing their own agenda and ignoring bipartisan efforts.

One example is guns - which shouldn't be a partisan issue at all:

  • Guns are the #1 cause of death for children and teens (ages 1-19) in America.*

  • 130 people per day die from firearm injuries in the U.S. - which is 12 times higher than our peer nations.

  • Common sense gun laws that have been passed in other states are proven to save lives.**

Despite these facts, Wisconsin Republicans have passed zero common sense gun laws.

ENOUGH.

Kids are literally dying. And smart gun laws save lives, without infringing on the rights of responsible gun owners.

Democrats have pledged to pass common sense gun laws in their first week.

Of course gun laws are not the only reason to vote for Democrats. Are you dissatisfied with having to vote for referendums just to keep the lights on at public schools? Vote Republicans out. Are you are sick of data centers sneaking into our state to steal our land and water and electricity? Vote Republicans out. Are you tired of low investment in our environment and public lands? Vote Republicans out.

A few key races will decide if Democrats take control of the Wisconsin legislature.

State Assembly

Dan Bukiewicz - Oak Creek - AD 21

Kevin Knoke - Hudson/ River Falls - AD 30

Ben Gruber - Mineral Point/ Darlington/Dodgeville/Mt. Horeb - AD 51

Becky Nichols - Menasha - AD 53

Ben Brist - Hales Corners/ Greendale/Franklin/Greenfield - AD 61

John Kroll - Wausau - AD 85

Brandy Tollefson - DePere/S. Green Bay - AD 88

Jeremiah Frederickson - Menomonie/Chippewa Falls - AD 92

State Senate

Robin Vining - Brookfield area - SD 5

Jenna Jacobson - SW WI incl. Platteville/Dodgeville/Monroe - SD 17

Trevor Jung - Greendale/ Franklin/Caledonia/N Racine - SD 21

And while it is important to flip our legislature, let's not lose focus on the Governor's race. We must fight for Democrat David Crowley to be our new governor, not Republican Tom Tiffany.

While serving in Congress, Tom Tiffany has voted hand-in-hand with Donald Trump. Pick an issue - he's been on the wrong side of it. Now 3 billionaires have given him 24 million dollars to lie to the voters about what he stands for. What exactly do they believe they are buying?

On the other hand we have David Crowley, whose success as a state Assemblyman and Milwaukee County Executive have earned him the endorsement of current Democratic governor Tony Evers and former President Barack Obama. Crowley is focused on lowering costs for people across Wisconsin, as he did for Milwaukee County in 2023 when he signed into law the largest property tax cut in Milwaukee County history.

My favorite endorsement for Crowley is this one from Khary Penebaker, who I met through my volunteer work with Moms Demand Action:

We need to vote for David Crowley!

But what did I mean when I said Wisconsin voters could save America?

America:

Trump is awful. If you are one of my readers, I know you agree with me.

The problem is, the legislative branch isn't doing it's job right now. Republicans are in control of the U.S. House (218 R, 214 D, 1 Ind, 2 vacancies) and Republicans are in control of the U.S. Senate (53 R, 45 D, 2 Ind.) And Republicans are consistently NOT holding Trump in check.

That's why this midterm election on Nov. 3rd is so important. If Democrats win in just a few races across the country, it will change who is in charge of the U.S. House and U.S Senate. And that will change everything. As Representative Mark Pocan explains, flipping the Congress to Democratic control means taking back the “power of the purse” and making Trump “the lamest of lame duck presidents”. A Democratic-led Congress can say “No funds can be used to…” and simply stop funding ANY Trump initiatives. A functioning Congress can and should be a co-equal branch of government that checks the power of the Executive branch,

All 8 Wisconsin Representatives are up for re-election in 2026. Some races seem like they are already decided, but TWO seats in Wisconsin are currently looking competitive, and flippable from Republican to Democrats.

  • Rebecca Cooke
    Rebecca Cooke
  • Mitchell Berman
    Mitchell Berman

Congressional District 3 in the Eau Claire/La Crosse/Stevens Point area: Derrick Van Orden (R) vs. Rebecca Cooke (D)

Congressional District 1 in the Whitewater/Janesville/Racine/Kenosha area: Bryan Steil (R) vs. Mitchell Berman (D)

Please do everything you can to support the Cooke and Berman in those two races, in order to flip majority control of the U.S. House of Representatives to Democrats and to hold Trump accountable.

What can you do to help?

So I've convinced you. Save Wisconsin, Save America. Where do you get started?

Wisconsinites, start by going to www.myvote.wisconsin.gov

Check your registration status. When is early voting in your area? When is The last day you can help your friend get registered to vote? What exactly will your ballot look like? Where to vote? How to register to vote? All this information is found at www.myvote.wisconsin.gov .

How can you help convince others to vote for Democrats in the 26 days between now and election day Nov. 3?

If you are in Wisconsin:

1) go to the nearest County Democrats office and offer to help. https://wisdems.org/our-party/more/county-parties/. Anyone there will help you get educated and get involved.

2) Go to https://www.mobilize.us/ and type in your city or zip code to find election activities in your neighborhood.

3) Join me and my friends! For a list of current ways to help in Whitewater, Wisconsin, go to https://www.campsojourn.com/sojournconnections

If you are out of state:

a) Donate to WI candidates who are in crucial, tight races, like Brienne Brown for Assembly, Becky Nichols for Assembly, or Brandy Tollefson for Assembly, or Mitchell Berman in CD1.

b) Join an organization that is doing postcard writing or phone banking to Wisconsin voters, like this: https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/954742/

c) Forward this blog to your Wisconsin friends :)

d) Come to Wisconsin between now and Nov. 3rd and get involved in election work!

There is a role for everyone in bringing about the outcome that we need. Canvass, drive a canvasser, phone bank, text bank, deliver baked goods, prepare literature for canvassers...there are many, many roles.

And remember - the difference is just 30,000 voters. Divide that by the number of voting wards in the state of Wisconsin, and that's just 3-4 people in each ward. If a few of us in every voting ward take on the responsibility of getting 3 more Democrats to vote, we will save Wisconsin, and save America. We can do this.

Please help us win.

Sojourn on!
