Sunday morning, August 9, 2026, 6:30AM. Buttercup and I head out to Whitewater Lake State Park for the millionth time. We're headed for the boat launch/pet area on Rice Lake, one of our all-time favorite spots. Today is a different type of sojourn. Today Buttercup is going to learn to kayak.

It is a dark and cold December morning in SE Wisconsin. Ten white Ford Starcraft F450 shuttles are parked in a pole barn, windshields facing the middle like five cows on each side of a trough. A cautious new driver slowly backs out her shuttle, shifts into park, and takes a photo.

The call came mid-June 2025…“We need help moving!” Down in Lewisville, Texas, my aunt and uncle were packing up their 4-bedroom home, and it was proving to be a huge task. Could I help with the move? “Aunt Soo” and “Unky Bunky” are two of my favorite people on the planet, so without hesitation I answered “Yes!”

We had three days to play, and I kept the plan loose: take two days to get up to Cornucopia - exploring dog parks and natural areas along the way - and stop in Wausau on the way back...
